1Password Guide for Adopets & Pet Loyalty

Primarily with Adopets customers, we use 1Password to log into customer accounts to troubleshoot issues, replicate errors for support tickets, review reporting, and more.

What is 1Password?

1Password is a secure password manager that helps you store and manage your passwords and other sensitive information. It offers the following tools to access your passwords:

Making Passwords Accessible Across All Devices

Generating a secure password is great for security, but can be burdensome if you’re on a device that doesn’t have that password saved. By using the 1Password mobile app, this should reduce the incidences where this is the case, as you can always transfer a strong password from your mobile device to the desktop that you’re working on.

  1. Install 1Password on Your Devices:

  2. Sync Your Vaults:

  3. Enable Autofill on Mobile Devices:

Using 1Password to log into accounts

  1. Select the browser extension (blue star)

  2. Search for the name of the shelter

  3. Click “Open & Fill.”

That’s it! You don’t even need to go to the site that you’d like to log into or find the “sign in” link on a home page. Once stored (correctly), 1Password can just zip you right into whatever account you’re trying to access.

Creating New Passwords for Shelter Accounts

When a new customer is onboarded, we create an account for them using the naming convention:

support+[ShelterAbbreviation]@adopets.com

Then, we use 1Password’s chrome extension to generate a Strong Password:

  1. Use the 1Password password generator to create a strong, unique password.

  2. Click on the "+" button and select "Password Generator" to customize the password settings.

Then, save the Password in the Shared Vault:

  1. Create a new entry in the shared vault, including the login URL, username, and generated password.

    1. Ensure the login URL is the site where they’ll be logging in, most commonly this should be “rescue.adopets.com” for Adopets customer accounts. This link is for auto-filling the passwords, not reminding us the home page of the customer’s public website.

Sharing Passwords for other accounts

Sometimes, we’ll need to share access for accounts that don’t allow us to have more than one seat. Social media profiles are prime examples.

  1. First, make sure that the person requesting the password is who they say they are. Do a quick Slack Huddle or have them contact you with the same request on more than 1 channel.

  2. Once verified, open the 1Password (blue star) extension in your browser or log into 1Password.com and find the shared item.

  3. Then, select the account you’d like the share

  4. Click the ellipsis in the upper-right

  5. Click “Share” in the drop-down.

Other: Naming Accounts

Because we have a folder for “archived” accounts that still populates when searches are performed, it’s a good idea to come up with a naming system.

When offboarding Adopets clients (guide still under construction), one step will be to rename their 1Password account to “Z_[ShelterName]” to prevent frustration in trying to log into a closed account later on.

(blue star) Bonus: How to claim your free personal/family account

The Pet Loyalty 1Password subscription includes a free personal account for employees. Nice!

To claim that, visit https://my.1password.com/profile and select “Redeem Now.” This will give unlimited access to your personal email as well as up to 4 additional accounts for your family.
